What should I say on my first language exchange call?
On your first language exchange call, introduce your nickname and learning language, then choose one shared interest and ask each other a simple question.
Prepare a language, a topic and a quiet place
Decide which language you want to practice and choose an easy topic such as music, food or travel. Check your microphone in a quiet place. You do not need a polished introduction or a long lesson plan.
Make the first question easy to answer
Try “I’m learning Korean. Would you like to practice English together?” Say which language you are comfortable using. After the other person answers, add a short experience of your own.
Ask again when you do not understand
Useful phrases include “Could you say that a little more slowly?” and “What does that expression mean?” Use subtitles and translation as support, and check names, places or jokes directly with the speaker.
Seven minutes is a starting point, not an assignment
A basic random voice call lasts seven minutes. A greeting, one shared interest and one new expression are enough for a first conversation. If you both want to continue, choose a call extension or agree on another time to talk.
