Your first language exchange call: what to say.
Your first goal isn't a long, perfect sentence. It's understanding one thing about each other. Prepare a short introduction and one question you would genuinely like to ask.
Prepare three things before the call
Choose the language you speak, the language you want to practice and a topic for today. Find a quiet place and check your microphone. Music, food and hobbies make approachable starting points. If you both want to practice, agree on how to share the languages and time.
Keep your introduction short
Introduce your nickname and the language you're learning, then ask your partner to speak slowly. You don't need to give your precise location or personal contact details. Say one sentence at a time and leave space for an answer.
Ask one follow-up question
If your partner mentions a song, ask what they like about it. If they mention a dish, ask when they usually eat it. Share a sentence about your own experience too, so the call feels like a conversation rather than an interview.
Check what you understood
Use captions and translations as support, then ask about expressions you don't recognize. Names, places and jokes can be translated incorrectly. Repeat your understanding in a short sentence and ask whether you got it right.
One way to use your nine minutes
Start with introductions and language preferences, spend the middle of the call on one shared interest, and finish by revisiting an expression you learned. This is a suggested conversation plan. NEON's basic random calls include 9 free minutes each, with no limit on the number of calls. Extending the same call uses Stars.
